Building Community Through Relationship

The purpose of the Building Community Through Relationship enrichment workshop is to help couples who have already attended a WorldWide Marriage Encounter Weekend experience a sense of true community with other couples, priests, and religious.  It is for all, whether they participate in only an occasional Marriage Encounter function, or are in local leadership of their communities.

The Concepts and Content are based on two books: “The Different Drum” by F. Scott Peck and “Seven Habits of Highly Effective People” by Steven Covey.

The Focus is to develop a sense of what community is and what it can be in today’s world.  It is designed to equip attendees with some skills and tools for forming and developing communities. It also helps communities be more aware of and attentive to supporting one another in living the lifestyle we are called to live in the church today.  The presentations are designed to help couples feel ownership and see themselves as a part of a local community.  In supporting one another, couples can feel supported in their journey to deeper, more enriching marriages.

Issues that affect and involve a local area as a whole should be handled with full participation of the general community from the outset.  The BCTR Weekend helps with this by giving all couples, not just those in leadership roles, some information and training in basic leadership skills and techniques in the context of a community.  Some of the skills and techniques included in the workshop are: basics in communication, how personality styles and associated behaviors affect relationships, goals and objectives, delegating, prioritizing or “putting first things first”, collaborating, and conflict resolution.

The workshop is presented by two couples: Tom and Kathy Dauer and Paul and Angie Gilmour.  Tom and Kathy have been involved in Marriage Encounter for more than 25 years. They have held various leadership roles, from representing their local area of Spokane as Executive couple to representing the Northwest Section 13 at the National Board of WorldWide Marriage Encounter.  Paul and Angie attended their first Marriage Encounter Weekend 2 years ago, and represent the youthful enthusiasm that comes from experiencing a truly life changing weekend in their marriage relationship.  They are now promoting and helping to build communities around the Northwest.  The workshop experience consists of presentations, exercises, and small and large group discussions.

The goal is to attract many couples in the community who have attended a Marriage Encounter weekend through the years, and to invite them to reconsider the power of their Sacrament and become involved - serving in their parish and enriched in the love and support of their local Marriage Encounter community.
